About the Wire Frame Grid

Question:

My wire frame grid has different density when in 'F9'.

I'm viewing the wire frame (hitting 'w') in 'F2' mode. Then when I change to 'F9' mode I see more points in the wire frame. This makes the landscape look different when shaping it and when running a train on it and is a big problem for me. As I'm doing a mountain line I'd like to have those extra grid points in the wire frame all the time to model the landscape with more detail. Is it something I do in the geometry extractor or in the route editor? Do I have to decide at the begining of a new route or can I change the level of terrain detail as I go along?

Answer:

I think what's happening is this; When pressing just the 'W', it just shows the standard grid, and 'F9' is the key for altering terrain.  I do believe that pressing 'F9' activates the detail level that was entered when you first extracted the new route. And I do believe that this can be changed. Open the Route Geometry Extractor, and load your route, including the Quad Tree. Select edit, and then select Route Values. There will be a setting called 'Terrain detail scaling factor', and that is what I think that you are looking for. I have mine set at 0.20, and so far I'm pretty satisfied with the way the terrain is looking.

{Comment by Jim Ward} That seems correct. I noticed it while I was creating screen shots of the Wire Frame to demonstrate the "Press V to cut out a triangle" process we use to create tunnels. I was trying to explain how setting the tile Error Bias to "0" and setting the terrain detail scaling to a small value would make it easier to cut out smaller terrain patches and saw the differences in the Wire Frame images.

{Comment by Okrasa Ghia} When in texturing mode (F7) select a terrain patch and right click to bring up the menu. Select 'Error Bias...' and set the value to 0, now all wire mesh grid points are used all the time. I do this now on every terrain patch where I lay track and leave the others at the default value (1).
