New South Wales - Short West And Short South Route
(version 1.0)

Route design by Brian Bere-Streeter, incorporating routes by Mike Simpson and Chris Nelson
and parts of a route by Peter Newell

This route encompasses the full Short West from Wallerawang to St.Marys in Sydney's west. The route extends onwards to Sydney Terminal (and Enfield and Darling Harbour) in the east. From Sydney terminal, the Short South traverses the Main South from Lidcombe (via Sefton) to beyond Goulburn.

Mainline route length:

  • 107 miles from Sydney to Wallerawang; and
  • 140 miles from Sydney to Goulburn.

In addition the route includes:

  • the suburban line from Granville to Liverpool via Merrylands;
  • the Richmond branch from Blacktown to Windsor and Richmond;
  • part of the Carlingford branch to Camellia, including all the industrial sidings in the Sandown area;
  • part of the Bankstown line from Sefton Park Junction to Birrong;
  • part of the Metro Goods Lines from Sefton Park Junction to Chullora Junction (and Enfield);
  • the Warwick Farm Racecourse branch;
  • part of the Holdsworthy Rifle Range line out of Liverpool;
  • the Picton to Mittagong Loop Line;
  • part of the Unanderra - Moss Vale line from Moss Vale to Robertson;
  • the Medway Quarry branch line.

As well as much original work by Brian Bere-Streeter, this "mega-route" encompasses all of Mike Simpson's Blue Mountains route, Chris Nelson's Southern Highlands route and parts of Peter Newell's Coals To Newcastle route to enable continous running (if you wanted to) from Wallerawang in the west to Goulburn in the south; see below:

Prototype Operator: New South Wales Government Railways and its successors.

Note #1: This method of installer preparation reduces the time Vista and some anti-virus programs may take to scan the EXE file.

Note #2: you may need to right-click and "Save Link/Target As" on the .D0x files to save them to your hard disk instead of having them open in your browser.

Note #3: read "Additional Files Required" further down this page: you will require more files.

File Sizes

.EXE file:    503 KB (515,377 bytes)
.D01 file:    291 MB (305,540,192 bytes)

Updated Guidelines Document:    56.8 KB (58,246 bytes)

Additional Files Required

  1. Xtracks 3.20 or higher
  2. Newroads 4.0 or higher

Tasks Required

  1. Download the two files linked above; ensure both files are in the same folder in your PC.

  2. Run the installer by double-clicking on the EXE file (do not touch the data file - .D01 - the installer EXE will load the data pack itself). The installer is automatically set to "Run As Administrator" for Vista and Windows 7 users.

    Do note that an "invalid data message" indicates that there is something wrong with the download: check filenames and exact file sizes. (Note: if the installer has stopped at ashphaltplat10mend.s, you have either not downloaded the .D01 file, your system (usually Internet Explorer) has renamed the file, or it is not in the same folder as the .EXE file.)

  3. You must have all six default routes and the Template folder installed BEFORE running this installer. The routes just need to be present: they DO NOT need to be unstored if you use Trainstore, nor do you need to activate them if you use Route Riter's ON/OFF utility (in fact only the Shapes and Textures folders of the default routes need to be present).

  4. You must have Xtracks 3.20 or higher installed.

  5. You must have Newroads 4.0 or higher installed.

  6. Allow the batch file to run to completion. If you do not see this batch file run in a DOS box, you most likely are a Vista or Windows 7 user. TURN OFF "User Account Control" (Start | Control Panel | User Accounts | Turn User Account Control On or Off); then right-click on the installme.bat file in the Route folder and set "Run As Administrator". The batch file should now run correctly.

  7. The first time you run this route, there will be a delay as MSTS "generates terrain buffers" - this is a one-off and subsequent use of this route will load normally.
